SIGMA ALPHA ZETA HERSTORY

FOUNDING SIGMA ALPHA ZETA

In 1992 a group of women at California State University, Fresno organized with the specific purpose of creating a unique organization that promoted multiculturalism, community service, and education. The catalyst for their concern was the lack of unity amongst women of color on their campus and the need for a group that embraced the differences among them. The women envisioned a multicultural group that would bridge the gap of varying races, cultures, and ethnicities.

In May of 1995, Sigma Alpha Zeta's Alpha chapter was officially recognized on the campus of CSU Fresno. That same year, the sorority invited like-minded women from San Jose State University to join their ranks as their Beta chapter. The group decided that this sorority would offer the best multicultural outlet for women on their campus, and a history of successful expansion was begun. Since then UC Santa Barbara (Gamma Chapter), San Diego State (Delta Chapter), UC Davis (Epsilon Chapter), UCLA (Zeta Chapter), and CSUN (Eta Chapter), UC San Diego (Theta) have joined the sisterhood.
